Brain Tumor Experience, A Journey Into an Unknown Land of Uncertainty

Tumor is a term use to describe an abnormal, uncontrolled, circumscribed growth of cells found in human being, animal or plant tissue. It is often swollen and is in a solid form.

Brain tumors are rare. The chances of an adult getting brain tumor are much higher than children. It is also true that tumors can cause illness, like epilepsy. Researches have shown that about 1 percent of the people, especially children, who have epilepsy, are caused by a brain tumor. This is because brain tumors in children involve the cerebellum and brainstem, parts of the brain that do not give rise to seizures, and also not the cerebral hemispheres.

Brain tumors are either primary or secondary. Primary tumors of the brain do not usually arise from the nerve cells. They will either arise in the meninges, the covering membranes of the brain, or in the supporting cells between the nerve cells, which played an important role in the nutrition. There are also other types of cerebral tumors, like those arising from the cells lining the cavities of the brain or from the blood vessels. These are however, the very rare case that will happen. Fortunately, primary brain tumors are also not equal to having bronchus, bowel or breast cancer and that brain tumors show no tendency in developing blood-borne in other organs.

Secondary tumors are different because it is carried in the blood to the brain from another site. The common one is the lung cancers (bronchus) or the breast cancer. Normally, the appearance of seizures in a patient is an ominous signal indicating that a secondary tumor has arisen within the brain. However, sometimes, the original cancer will not be discovered during the first seizure. It is only when the clinical examination starts to reveal a small tell-tale lump in the lung, or the breast cancer that is shown on the computerized tomography (CT) or the common X-ray after the scan is completed.

To make it worse, there are other characteristics which cause to prevent effective treatment such as the gliomas infiltrate normal brains extensively, which cause difficulty in removing tumor during the process of surgical removal. As a result, it is very normal to have recurrence after surgical excision. These types of tumor are usually treated with radiotherapy, chemotherapy or even surgery. Another one is meningiomas, an encapsulated tumor. The advantage about meingiomas is that it can be completely removed. However, in any cases, due to the fact that majority of the cases involved extensive blood supply which might cause brain haemorrhage and hence, removal process would be difficult for the doctors.
